Public Hearing August 13 for 2013-2018 Transportation Improvement Program

The Jefferson County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Monday, August 13, 2012, at 10:00 AM in the Commissioners Chambers at the County Courthouse in Port Townsend, in consideration of the proposed Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for 2013 through 2018.

Update: The Board adopted the 2013-2018 TIP unanimously on August 13 through Resolution 49-12.

The 2013-2018 TIP is a list of capital transportation projects that Jefferson County Public Works anticipates undertaking in the corresponding six-year period. The list includes secured and anticipated funding sources for each project.

County to Adopt Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program

Port Townsend, WA— Each year Jefferson County adopts a Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for the next six-year period to provide direction for transportation improvements on the County’s 399-mile public road system. The Board of County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Monday, August 13, 2012 at 10:00 AM in the Commissioners Chambers at the County Courthouse to consider the proposed 2013-2018 TIP developed by the Department of Public Works. The Board will simultaneously consider amendments to the existing 2012-2017 TIP to enable grant applications this year.

The TIP is a list of potential capital transportation projects that the County may undertake in the next six years, depending upon funding availability. It includes cost estimates and secured or planned revenue sources for each project. The proposed 2013-2018 TIP lists 30 capital projects, including three projects related to past emergency repairs. The total estimated cost to implement the entire program is $23.3 million, with about 94% of the funding to come from State and Federal sources. However, funding for much of the program has not yet been secured. Projects must be on a TIP in order to be eligible for most State and Federal grant programs.

Public Works proposes projects for the TIP based on an assessment of transportation needs throughout the County system. “There will always be greater needs than can be met with the funding available to Jefferson County,” says Principal Transportation Planner Josh Peters. “The long debate in Congress over the new Federal transportation package signed into law in July shows that the funding picture is unclear beyond the next couple years.”

“We do our best to prioritize needs and make every dollar count, whether local, State, or Federal,” Peters adds.
